Katherine Monson (Head of Kongsberg Satellite Services USA or “KSAT”) joined AERO 447 Spacecraft Design and AERO 562 Space Operations classes on November 28th and 29th. Katherine presented an overview of KSAT’s worldwide communications network and gave the students some valuable insight into key factors in the design and operation of ground stations and communications services associated with space operations. She fielded a bunch of great questions from the students ranging from ground station configuration to licensing to space operations challenges and opportunities. We especially enjoyed the stories about KSAT ground stations in Svalbard, Norway and Troll, Antarctica.
Dan Cajacob (Director of Space Systems at Hawkeye 360), joined Katherine during the AERO 562 class to provide a “customer’s perspective” of satellite ground station requirements and operations. Dan dropped by Cal Poly from nearby Vandenberg AFB where three Hawkeye 360 spacecraft have been readied for launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as part of the SSO-A mission.
Many thanks to both Katherine and Dan for helping the students understand and appreciate what it takes to support routine and critical spacecraft operations!
